Same Day Dentistry – Cerec
The CEREC Procedure
It is estimated that 1.2 billion metal fillings will need to be replaced in the next 10 years. CEREC (an acronym for Chair-side Economical Restorations that are Esthetic and Ceramic) describes a method used by many dentists worldwide since 1987 to replace these fillings and to restore any tooth that is decayed, weakened or broken, to its natural strength and beauty. CEREC dentistry is typically done in a single appointment with all-ceramic tooth colored materials. The CEREC process begins when your dentist anesthetizes and prepares the tooth as would be done for many other restorations. Digital pictures are then taken of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth using a small intra-oral camera. This ‘optical impression’ process takes 1-2 minutes. Next, the CEREC computer helps the dentist create the restoration for your tooth by taking the digital images obtained in the optical impression and converting them into a 3-dimensional virtual model on the computer screen. The restoration data is sent to a separate milling machine in the office where a ceramic block (pre-selected to match your tooth shade) is placed. The restoration is precisely carved out of the block in about 5-10 minutes. After trying in, adjusting, polishing then glazing, the restoration is bonded into place.
Your tooth is restored with no ‘temporary’ or return trip…all treatment is completed in a single appointment.
